This is one example where the famous saying
“When in Rome, do as Romans do” applies perfectly. When you travel to Lebanon or any other country, it is important to appreciate local traditions, mores and customs. This will help you understand local behavior. What is normally accepted in your culture may well be viewed as an offense by people who enjoy a different culture.
Therefore, when you hike on the LMT, please remember:
- • To wear conservative clothes. This applies to both men and women.
- • To ask for permission before taking photographs of people.
- • To show respect for local etiquette. Men can shake hands and kiss on the cheek when meeting other men, but not women unless the woman extends her hand.
- • To make sure that sharing a room with a member of the opposite sex (unless you are married) is acceptable to the host.
- • To mention your Lebanese origin if you are Lebanese! Local residents will appreciate it greatly and chances are they know someone from where you come!
- • That alcohol and pork meat might not be available or allowed in all villages.
- • That when villagers invite you over for a friendly meal or coffee, they don’t expect you to pay them in return.
