Hiking Ethics
Creating a memorable trail experience for yourself and others is closely tied to your behavior on the trail. When you hike in nature, including on the LMT, you should enjoy the wilderness without harming it. Therefore, it is important to understand and practice the principles below:
  • • Don't hike alone.
  • • Be prepared for emergencies (fog, injuries, inset bites, torrential rain, etc.)
  • • Stay on the trail! Straying from the trail will harm biodiversity and can cause erosion.
  • • Do not trespass on private property.
  • Do not leave any trash behind.
  • Leave what you find! Don't pick flowers or fruits.
  • Respect wildlife! Don't feed or harm wildlife.
  • • Respect local communities and local traditions.
  • • Contribute to the economic development of local communities: hire local guides, stay longer in the villages, buy food and meals in villages, buy local products, sleep over in local lodging facilities etc.
In areas where the LMT traverses a Nature Reserve,
the following is NOT allowed:

  • • smoking, campfires or starting any type of fire
  • • tree or shrub cutting
  • • collection of any flora or fauna
  • • camping
  • • littering
  • • hunting
  • • pets
  • • noise or chaos
