The historic village of Ehden is located 120 kilometers from Beirut,
in the mountains of Northern Lebanon, 1450 m above sea level. Close
to the town is the Ehden Nature reserve perched on the mountain
between 1700 and 2000m, and offering wonderful natural sceneries.
Name
The origins of the name "Ehden" are obscured by time and myth.
One explanation is that it is derived from the biblical Eden. It has been
mentioned, in the oldest manuscript about Ehden, that "Ehden is an old
village in the middle of Mount Lebanon. To the northern side it has
been known as Eden paradise due to its abundant water falling from a
cold source".
Attractions
Ehden is home to the first five churches built by the early Christians:
Saint Mama, (still exists), the oldest Maronite church in Lebanon built in
749 AD on the site of a pagan temple; Saint Peter (still exists); Saint
John (destroyed); Saint Ghaleb (destroyed in 1799); Saint Estephan
(destroyed in 1902).
